On March 22, four Kentucky tobacco farmers filed a state class action lawsuit against Universal Leaf North America, a subsidiary of Universal Corporation, the world’s leading leaf tobacco merchant and processor. The farmers seek unspecified monetary damages for Universal Leaf’s alleged breaches of contracts to purchase tobacco from the farmers. The farmers also assert claims of breach of good faith and fair dealing, negligent misrepresentation, and promissory estoppel. It has been reported that the law firm representing the farmers is searching for other farmers who have been “betrayed by tobacco companies.”
